The EFCC: A Powerful Tool Turned Political

EFC C’s Lost Essence

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kayode Ajulo, believes that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has lost its original purpose and has become a political tool. He is calling on President Bola Tinubu to take action and establish a presidential task force to expose corrupt officials within the EFCC.

Corruption Within the EFCC

The head of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, recently expressed concern about the prevalence of bribery and gratification among the commission’s investigators. However, Ajulo finds it surprising that Olukoyede only acknowledged the issue without taking proper action to remove corrupt personnel. He argues that if the EFCC cannot clean itself, the President should step in and establish a task force to conduct integrity tests on the agency.

The Need for a Task Force

Ajulo emphasizes the importance of cleaning out corrupt individuals within the EFCC to restore its integrity. He suggests that a presidential task force, similar to an auditing and integrity test, should be established to identify and remove these corrupt officials. The task force would help bring the EFCC back to its original purpose and ensure that it operates effectively.

The Decline of the EFCC

Ajulo points out that the EFCC used to function properly, but over time, it has deviated from its core mission. He believes that the agency has become a political tool, which is detrimental to its credibility and effectiveness. This decline has led to a loss of trust among Nigerians towards the EFCC.

Loss of Trust

Ajulo highlights how Nigerians used to have confidence in the EFCC, often seeking its assistance in resolving legal matters. However, he claims that now, unless a case has political implications or involves politically exposed individuals, the EFCC is no longer the preferred option. This shift has resulted in a loss of trust and a negative perception of the agency.
