9 Commissioners Resign in Rivers State

Rivers: Fubara moves on with 10 as 9 commissioners resign the position

In a surprising turn of events, nine out of the nineteen commissioners appointed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State have resigned from their positions. This mass resignation comes as a result of the political crisis between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of Federal Capital Territory.

The Resignations

As of Saturday, nine commissioners who were loyal to Wike have left their offices. These commissioners include the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor (SAN), Commissioner for Works, Dr. Des George-Kelly, Commissioner for Special Duties, Emeka Woke, Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mrs. Inime Aguma, Commissioner for Finance, Isaac Kamalu, Commissioner for Education, Prof. Chinedu Mmom, Commissioner for Housing, Dr. Gift Worlu, Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Jacobson Nbina, and Commissioner for Environment, Austin Ben-Chioma.

However, there are still ten commissioners who were also appointed by Wike but have switched their loyalty to Fubara. These commissioners include Chris Green (Sports), Mr. Uchechukwu Nwafor (Energy and Natural Resources), Dr. Roseline Uranta (Women Affairs), Prof. Henry Ogiri (Power), Engr. Charles Amadi (Chieftaincy and Community Development), Dr. Adaeze Oreh (Health), Dr. Kenneth Chisom Gbali (Youth Development), Joseph Johnson (Information and Communications), Victor Kii (Agriculture), and Isaac Umejuru (Urban Development).

Pressure on Other Commissioners

There are indications that other members of the cabinet are also under pressure to resign from their positions. The political crossfire in the state has caught up with the Commissioner for Housing, Worlu, the Commissioner of Environment, Austen Ben-Chioma, Commissioner of Information (Johnson), Commissioner of Urban Development (Umejuru), and Commissioner of Agriculture (Kii), who were all appointed just two months ago.

Resignations from Ikwerre-Speaking Local Government Areas

All the commissioners from the four Ikwerre-speaking local government areas of the state have already resigned. These local government areas include Ikwerre LGA, Emohua LGA, Obio/Akpor, and Port-Harcourt City.
