House Urges Semester Payment for Students

The House of Representatives is urging universities, polytechnics, and other tertiary institutions to adopt a semester-based school fee payment model. This change will make it easier for students to pay their fees and reduce the challenges of the current session-based system.

The Motion

Taura Sa’ad, a member of the All Progressives Congress representing Ringim/Taura Federal Constituency, Katsina State, moved the motion titled “Call on Nigerian universities and tertiary institutions to adopt a semester-based school fee payment system.” Sa’ad highlighted the need for cost-effective and efficient education financing models in tertiary institutions across the country.

The Challenges

The current annual school fee payment system in Nigeria presents financial challenges for students and families due to recent subsidy removal and the single-window forex policy. Sa’ad pointed out that international universities like the University of California and the University of Sydney have already implemented semester-based fee payment systems to make it more convenient for students and parents.

The Benefits

Adopting a semester-based school fee payment system minimizes the financial strain on students, improves access to higher education, and enables institutions to establish a more transparent financial structure.
