A presidential spokesman, Tope Ajayi, has clarified that President Bola Tinubu did not ask for a yacht.

Outrage over the Supplementary Budget

Recently, there has been a lot of outrage after the details of the N2.1 trillion supplementary budget submitted by Tinubu to the National Assembly were published.

Allocation of Funds

According to the budget, N5.09 billion was allocated for the yacht, N2.9 billion for sport utility vehicles for the Presidential Villa, and another N2.9 billion for the replacement of operational vehicles for the presidency.

The Yacht and the Navy

The yacht was listed under the Nigerian Navy’s proposed capital expenditure of N42.3 billion.

Setting the Record Straight

Addressing the issue, Ajayi stated that he doubted if President Tinubu needed a yacht to perform the functions of his office.

He clarified, “The trending issues on social media are two items in the 2023 supplementary budget. One is the provision for a presidential yacht in the supplementary budget by the Navy, and the other is over N6 billion for vehicles for the State House.”

Ajayi emphasized, “It is important to state clearly that President Bola Tinubu didn’t ask for a presidential yacht, and I doubt he needs one to perform the functions of his office. From what I know, the request for a yacht, however it is named or couched in the budget, is from the Navy, and they must have operational reasons for why it is required.”

Transparency and Budgeting

Ajayi also highlighted the need for transparency in budgeting. He mentioned that the budget office should explain to the public why such expenditures should be accommodated, especially considering the economic situation of the country.

Moreover, he acknowledged, “Our budgeting system has been the subject of public attack due to the simplistic way some line items are described. For example, in 2016, a project worth over N300 million was described as a ‘website’ in the budget, which caused controversy.”

The Role of Journalism

Furthermore, Ajayi stressed the importance of responsible journalism. He stated, “Journalism should enrich public enlightenment and not create an atmosphere of siege. It is poor reporting to always reduce State House budgetary provisions to the President and Vice President.”

Additionally, he elaborated, “When the State House makes provision for vehicles or food, it is not solely for the President’s use. These provisions are made to accommodate state events, meetings, hosting of VIPs, foreign dignitaries, and visits by other Heads of State.”
