Passports Seized to Stop Fleeing

The Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken the passports of Betta Edu, the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and her predecessor, Sadiya Umar-Farouk. This action was taken to prevent them from leaving the country while investigations into alleged fraud continue.

Banks Executives Grilled

The CEOs of Zenith, Providus, and Jaiz banks were also questioned by the EFCC regarding their involvement in the alleged N37 billion fraudulent transactions linked to Edu and Umar-Farouk. The commission discovered that most of the transactions were carried out through these banks.

Passport Seized as Bail Condition

Umar-Farouk’s passport was seized as part of her bail conditions before she was released. This measure was taken to ensure she does not leave the country while the investigation is ongoing.

Preventing Escape

The EFCC has seized the passports of both ministers to prevent them from fleeing the country. The commission wants to ensure that they remain available to answer questions during the investigation.

Lawyer Unreachable

The lawyer representing Umar-Farouk did not respond to calls or messages seeking comment on his client’s situation. Efforts to reach Edu were also unsuccessful.

Suspension of Halima Shehu

Halima Shehu, the National Coordinator and CEO of the National Social Investment Programme has been suspended indefinitely due to alleged financial misappropriation. She was arrested and questioned by the EFCC regarding the movement of N44 billion without presidential approval.

Assisting Investigators

As part of her bail conditions, Shehu has been reporting to the EFCC office every day to assist with the investigation. Before her current role, she worked as the National Coordinator of the Conditional Cash Transfer Programme under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
