Nigeria’s Poverty Alleviation Expansion

Federal Government Expands Social Register to Include Pensioners and EX-Servicemen, Removes Beneficiaries Above Poverty Line.

On October 21, 2023, Nigeria’s government epanded its cash program to include more people and remove those no longer in extreme poverty, with the goal of eradicating poverty and boosting living standards for millions.

Stricter Eligibility Criteria

The government is implementing strict criteria, excluding those without NIN and BVN, and removing deceased beneficiaries from the list.

Central Bank Oversee Payments

Payment will now come directly from the CBN to beneficiaries, starting next week, benefiting five million households.

A Safety Net for 15 Million Households.

For the 2023 International Day for Poverty Eradication, President Bola Tinubu began distributing N25,000 to 15 million households over three months to counter the effects of the fuel subsidy removal and fight poverty nationwide.

Expanded and Verified Register

Rasheed Olarenwaju, the special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, confirmed the expand register now includes pensioners, veterans, and additional vulnerable individuals previously missed. He said, “We are using a verified register.

Removing Beneficiaries Above Poverty Line

Jamaldeen Kabir emphasized expanding the register, verifying to exclude those above the poverty line, and adding veterans’ spouse and pensioners.

Payment Commences Soon

Olarenwaju said, “The cash transfer scheme has launched and verified households are receiving payments. The batches start next week, but some have already received alerts.”

Stricter Controls for Credibility

NIN and BVN ensure credibility and transparency; process goes straight from CBN to beneficiaries, no middlemen.

Striking Off Dead Recipients

Olarenwaju confirmed removal of recipients after verification; final count, possibly in the million, to be disclosed soon. Reasons: death, no longer poor, or unlocatable; compiled unber coming soon.

Poverty Eradication as Government Priority

Government aligns with President Tinubu’s agenda for food security, economic growth, and job creation. Actions: 3,000 CNG buses and farm investment for better transport and food security.

The expansion and review of the Conditional Cash Transfer scheme are crucial steps in the government’s mission to combat poverty and uplift the lives of Nigerians living in extreme poverty.
