FIFA Hands Down Three-Year Ban on Rubiales for Forced Kiss

In a major disciplinary decision, FIFA has banned former Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales from all football activities for three years. According to FIFA, Rubiales forced a kiss on Spain women’s national team player Jenni Hermoso without her consent at the 2022 Women’s World Cup medal ceremony in August.

The Incident and Provisional Suspension

Rubiales came under fire in the aftermath of Spain’s World Cup victory when Hermoso said the kiss left her feeling “vulnerable and like the victim of an assault. She described it as an “impulsive, macho act, out of place and with no type of consent. In response, FIFA provisionally suspended Rubiales for 90 days in September pending further investigation.

Three-Year Ban Imposed

In a statement this week, FIFA announced it had imposed the maximum three-year ban allowed under their statutes. The FIFA disciplinary committee found Rubiales in violation of integrity and harassment rules. He has been barred from all football activities at both the national and international level. Rubiales has the option to appeal the decision to the FIFA appeals committee within 10 days.
